4 July 2006 (belated!)
In June 1776, just a month before the Declaration of Independence was ratified, the white men of Barnstable, Mass., voted on whether America should break its bonds with Great Britain. The tally: 30 for independence, 35 against and 65 abstentions.
...
[I]n the years leading up to the Revolutionary War, as many as a fifth of those living in America wanted to remain British subjects. Probably at least that many again were apathetic or opportunistically waiting to see which side won. The American Revolution, many historians argue, was also a civil war.
The loyalists or Tories, as the opponents of independence were known, came from all social and economic classes. An act of banishment, passed against some 300 Massachusetts loyalists in 1778, listed them by trade or profession: About a third were merchants or professional men, a third were farmers, and the rest were artisans, laborers or small shopkeepers. Many Southern slaves and American Indians also believed they would fare better under continued British rule.
Clearly, some loyalists were motivated by self-interest or greed; Britain was paying their salaries or buying their goods. Others believed only oligarchies of well-bred intellectuals were competent to govern a country. They looked down on revolutionary leaders as "men whom nobody knows." And some were convinced that Great Britain, then the world's most powerful nation, would make short work of America's shabby rebels.
Still others, lovers of order and tradition, felt emotionally attached to Britain's flag and what it stood for -- a constitutional monarchy with proven mechanisms for resolving disputes and maintaining social stability.

2006 sees significant pockets of opposition to the War on Jihadistan, though, for the most part, their motivation is far less honorable than the dissidents of 1776: simply, they despise George W. Bush more than they fear the Jihadists.
The "loyal opposition" has metastasized into The Fifth Column.
Most recently, the Hamdan decision, the deciding vote cast and opinion written by the dullard who occupies Robert Bork's seat on the Supreme Court, dealt a blow, albeit fleeting, to the nation's ability to wage war against a savage, un-uniformed enemy who recognizes no conventions save those of Mohammed.
Fellow tautologist J.P. Stevens couldn't even wrap his over-educated noggin around the concept of "no court".
The reaction from the enemy within was swift and predictable:
"The Good Guys" won , exclaimed one promiment left wing lawyer.
"Today's Supreme Court decision reaffirms the American ideal that all [The Ponderosa: All? ALL?] are entitled to the basic guarantees of our justice system. This is a triumph for the rule of law, gushed mentally-challenged House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, in the process unwittingly (though wouldn't one first need wits?) providing the RNC with a killer ad for the Fall campaign.
Loopy Left Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold lobbed another hanging curve at RNC ad makers: "The Supreme Court's decision concerning military commissions at Guantanamo Bay is a major rebuke to an administration that has too often disregarded the rule of law."
The GOP must be thanking Allah for the jackassery of its enemies.
Meanwhile, The New York Times' ("All the Treason that Fits We Print") executive editor and Quisling-in-Chief Bill Keller has decided that it's in the public's interest to reveal the secret machinations of our intelligence agencies to our enemies.
We believe it is in the public's interest to prevent it from being blown to Kingdom Come by members of a 7th century death cult.
Apparently, to Keller, the First Amendment trumps laws against letting the enemy know what we're up to -- sort of a "Get Out of Leavenworth Free" card.
Elsewhere, useful idiots like John Murtha, Cindy Sheehan and staff at virtually every major media organ continue to be strummed like vintage Les Pauls by an enemy that learned the lesson of Vietnam: it's not necessary to defeat America militarily if you can find enough kooks amongst us to undercut the effort and deflate the national will.
Senator Jean Kerry-Heinz, unrepentant for his instrumental role in abandoning the South Vietnamese to the predations of the communist North, seems hellbent on reliving past glories by selling out 25 million Iraqis 6 months from now ... Oops, now it's 12 ... Watch this space for updates.
Miraculously, the resolve of the people of Iraq has exceeded that of our enemy within, and they continue to defy the enemies of Civilization -- risking death to go to the polls on three occasions and, after months of strained negotiations, empanelling a cabinet.
Rather than capitulating to the hellbeasts, as many here would have us do, they have spit back in their faces, even as the toll of Iraqis murdered by the terrorists far outnumbers our losses.
These enemies of freedom can no longer be properly termed "insurgents" -- "Minutemen", according to the Porcine Propagandist. Their goal is not to free their country from an invading army, but to overthrow a freely elected government and replace it with the former Baathist tyranny at best, the Sharia at worst.
It would hearten us -- and give them a smidgen of credibility -- if those who call themselves "liberals" would actually direct their anger where it belongs: at the savages who drive into crowds in bomb-laden cars and behead captives (clearly, Justice Kennedy needs to get them up to speed on the Geneva Conventions) with the goal of re-enslaving 25 million people.
Come January 20, 2009, we will have a new president. But the Jihadist threat will remain, even increase if the new president happens to be pro-surrender Democrat. Unlike the Rabid Left, the terrorists did not begin loathing America the moment Team Bush thwarted the Lunatic Al Gore's attempt to steal the 2000 election.
In the wake of all the insane rantings and screeching over common sense anti-terrorism tactics employed by the current Administration, it will be difficult politically for a Democrat Administration -- which will suddenly have the lives of 300 million Americans to worry about -- to do what is necessary to protect those millions without inflaming the kids at Daily Kos and MoveOn. The influence of these nutroots on the DNC is yet another reason the party cannot be entrusted with the security of the Republic. Providing for the Common Defence is no job for children.
We recall, in the days immediately after 9/11 when all but the most hardened domestic America haters (Chomsky/Moore/Churchill) actually behaved like Americans for a few days. Granted, it wasn't long till most of them suffered a relapse of Bush Derangement Syndrome, but, to paraphrase WJM's Murray Slaughter, when a pig flies you don't get mad at him for not staying up very long.
We're not asking you Loony Lefties to extinguish your American flags and wave them.
Just realize that, under an Islamic Republic of America the perverts, pornographers, atheists and baby eviscerators will be among the first to go.
